Stella SW 18000HG vs. Saltiga 20000-H | After Years of Abuse Targeting Giant Bluefin Tuna — Which One Actually Held Up? 😤🎣
When it comes to comparing big SW reels, these two names always come up 🎣✨
Stella SW vs. Saltiga 😤💪
I get asked all the time — which one is better? 🤭
I want to be clear upfront: everything I’m sharing is based on my own reels, my own environment, and my own fishing style. This is not an absolute verdict — but at least in my experience, I noticed a pretty clear difference 🥹✨
The reels I’m reviewing today are the 20 Stella SW 18000HG and the 20 Saltiga 20000-H that I actually used in the field 😊
For reference, the successor models — the 26 Stella SW 18000HG and the 25 Saltiga 20000-H — are already available, but since I haven’t purchased them yet, this review does not reflect the latest models. Please keep that in mind 🙇♀️

Just looking at the numbers, you can probably already sense where this is going 🤔💭
My Maintenance Routine — Pretty Lazy, I’ll Admit 😅
I’ll be honest with you.
After fishing, my maintenance is basically just a rinse with fresh water 🚿
And during back-to-back fishing trips, I’d often skip even that and use the reel for days without rinsing it at all 😇 lol
I know the right thing to do is properly rinse out the salt after every session and send it in for regular overhauls 😂
But the data you’re seeing is the result of not doing that — just grinding through it all 🥹
Maybe the results would’ve been different with proper maintenance — but I think this works as real-world durability data for the lazy angler out there 💪✨
✍️ Stella SW 18000HG Durability — Keeping It Real
The drag seizure was genuinely scary 😱
Having the drag stop functioning mid-tuna-fight was a shock. In my case, it was just slipping slightly, so I managed to get through it.
Between that and the bail breakage, I won’t pretend it came through unscathed.
But when I think about it calmly — 5 years, 100+ trips, zero overhauls, rinse-only maintenance — having only those two issues is honestly pretty impressive durability 🥹✨
And the repair costs being just a few thousand to under ¥10,000 each time was easy on the wallet too 😊✨
✍️ Saltiga 20000-H Durability — Keeping It Real

I don’t want anyone to misunderstand — the rigidity of the Saltiga is the real deal 💪✨
Even when the grinding noise started, the reel still retrieved line just fine. That part is true 🤭
It wasn’t broken. But that’s actually what made it tricky 😅
Fighting a big bluefin tuna while carrying that nagging feeling of something being off is more mentally draining than you’d expect 🥲
From the moment that grinding sound starts, it’s always there in the back of your mind with every cast — you know what I mean? 😂🥲
And because it isn’t completely broken, you never quite know when to send it in for repair 😂
In the end, it was just under ¥20,000 in repairs — twice. That adds up to a pretty significant total 🥲
🤔 Stella SW vs. Saltiga — They’re Just Built Differently
The Stella SW 18000HG is all about that smooth, silky retrieve and the precise, responsive drag — it just feels amazing 😋✨
That said, under extreme load, there were moments where I could sense just a hint of fragility.
The Saltiga 20000-H, on the other hand, feels like pure rigidity and raw power 💪
Even when it starts showing wear, it just keeps pushing forward — there’s a real toughness to it 🤭
It’s not about which one is better overall — it comes down to what you prioritize 😊
🔍 Addendum — The 25 Saltiga After-Service Program Is Worth Checking Out
This is about the current 25 Saltiga, not the 20 model — but it’s worth knowing about, so I wanted to add it here 😊
The 25 Saltiga comes with Daiwa’s special after-service program ✨
Here’s what’s included 👇
- Reel counseling with a dedicated Meister technician
- Free annual oil check service
- Free parts replacement for wear and failure (including repairs and overhauls)
- Long-term coverage valid through the end of March 2031 🥹💓
Note: A handling fee of ¥4,950 (tax included) applies each time.
When I think about the two repair bills just under ¥20,000 I racked up with my 20 Saltiga, this program honestly sounds incredibly attractive 😳
If you’re considering the 25 Saltiga, definitely look into this after-service program too 🎣✨
🎣💓 Stella SW vs. Saltiga — So Which One Is Better?
When it comes down to which reel I’d bring to chase bluefin tuna, my answer is the Stella SW 18000HG 😤💪
The reason is simple — the fact that it held up without major failure through 5 years, 100+ trips, zero overhauls, and rinse-only maintenance. That’s all 🥹✨
Looking at total repair costs as well, the Stella SW came out cheaper in the end 💰
That said, if I were buying the 25 Saltiga new today, that after-service program would be a serious selling point 🤭✨
I’ll say it again — this is purely based on my own reels and my own environment 😊
I have absolutely no intention of dismissing anglers who swear by the Saltiga 🙇♀️💓
I hope this was at least a little helpful to someone out there 🎣✨✨
